Origin of the name Schiltron
|
|
|
The schiltron was a medieval military innovation from the Scots consisting
of a tightly packed group of soldiers holding long spears. Initially defensive
in usage against heavy cavalry, the formation was turned into an attacking
formation and led to the defeat of the English Army at the Battle of Bannockburn
in 1314.
In this way, it can be seen to be an innovation from a relatively weak
power, initially defensive but turned into an attacking formation that led to
the defeat of a greater power.
